Tyson-Paul Fight Becomes the Most Bet-On Boxing Match in History
According to Entain, the Tyson-Paul fight has officially become the most bet-on boxing match of all time. High viewership and relatively even betting odds attracted a surge of new bettors.
A Historic Success for the Tyson-Paul Fight
At its peak, the Tyson-Paul fight was watched by an estimated 65 million households on Netflix, making it the most-viewed televised boxing match in history. Additionally, around 50 million viewers tuned in for the Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor fight on the undercard.
Greg Ferris, Managing Director of Sports at Entain, noted that Netflix’s decision to stream the fight created a rare crossover event, attracting fans from both camps. The platform’s extensive subscriber base, coupled with the fight’s heavy promotion and no extra cost for existing customers, led to a record-breaking audience. This unprecedented exposure also brought in a wave of new bettors eager to wager on their favorite fighters.
The Tyson-Paul fight shattered the previous betting record set by the Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk match in May 2024. Interestingly, Jake Paul already held six spots in the top 25 most bet-on boxing matches in Entain’s history.
A Profitable Event for Entain
Data from Entain, which owns brands such as BetMGM, Coral, and Ladbrokes, revealed that the Tyson-Paul fight attracted the highest number of bets and the largest total betting handle for a sporting event in the company’s history.
The fight proved to be highly profitable for operators, with 68% of bettors wagering on Tyson to win, and the most popular bet being a knockout victory for him.
Greg Ferris, Managing Director for Sports at Entain, said, “Our trading desks are always ready for an increase in interest from a “celebrity” type fighter, but the impact of Netflix broadcasting this fight can’t be overlooked. Their large subscriber base, promotion and the decision to offer to existing customers at no additional cost saw record numbers of viewers.
Putting these two in a ring attracted fans from both sides of the fence, creating a rare crossover event. With the odds also relatively close, a whole raft of new bettors flocked to back their favourites making this the most bet fight in our history.
It will be fascinating to see if this follows through to their Christmas Day NFL games, which they are broadcasting for the first time this year, and if any other large streaming platforms react,” concluded Ferris.
