Texas Governor Greg Abbott Backs Sports Betting Legalization
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expressed openness to legalizing online sports betting. Speaking on the “Texas Take” podcast, Abbott stated that he has “nothing against” legislation that would allow Texas to join 39 other states with legal sports betting.

Regulation Over Illegal Betting
Abbott acknowledged that many Texans already place bets illegally through offshore websites or by traveling to states where sports betting is allowed. He believes Texas should regulate the industry, offering a safe and legal alternative.
According to the governor, betting has become part of the sports experience, especially for NFL games and other major events.
His remarks represent one of the strongest endorsements of sports betting from a Texas leader. The industry has been intensifying lobbying efforts in recent years, hoping to win legislative approval.
A Political Roadblock Remains
Despite Abbott’s support, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick remains the biggest obstacle to legalization. Patrick has firmly opposed gambling expansion, stating that he will not bring a sports betting bill to the Senate floor unless it gains strong support from Republican lawmakers. Even with Abbott on board, changing conservative opposition will be a challenge.
Public opinion surveys indicate strong support for legal sports betting. Recent polling found that:
- 60% of Texans favor online sports betting legalization.
- 73% support expanding casino gambling in the state.
- 56% approve of sports betting at professional sports venues in Texas.
These numbers suggest that Texans are ready for change, which could increase pressure on lawmakers.
For legalization to happen, lawmakers must approve a constitutional amendment. This requires a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate. If passed, the issue would then go to Texas voters in a statewide referendum.
