SBA Leads Charge Against Proposed Illinois Sports Betting Tax Hike
In a decisive move against a proposed tax hike on sports betting in Illinois, the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA) has rallied significant opposition from both industry stakeholders and consumers.
The consortium, comprising major players such as BetMGM, DraftKings, Fanatics, and FanDuel, has launched a vigorous campaign urging citizens to voice their dissent to state lawmakers.
Campaign Success: 25,000 Emails and Counting
The SBA’s call to action has resonated strongly, with over 25,000 emails flooding the inboxes of Governor JB Pritzker and state legislators. This groundswell of public opposition underscores the widespread concern regarding the proposed tax increase from 15% to 35%.
Detrimental Effects of Tax Hike
The SBA has outlined several compelling arguments against the tax hike, emphasizing its adverse impact on the sports betting market. Firstly, a higher tax rate would inevitably translate to poorer odds for players, discouraging participation.
Additionally, operators foresee a reduction in promotions and bonuses, further dampening consumer interest. Most alarmingly, the SBA warns of the potential surge in illegal gambling activity as bettors seek refuge with tax-free offshore operators.
Financial Strain on Operators
Beyond the consumer perspective, the SBA highlights the financial strain that the proposed tax hike would impose on sportsbook operators. With many operators already operating at a loss, a 133% increase in taxation would severely curtail investments in essential areas such as technology upgrades, responsible gaming practices, and customer support services.
Nationwide Implications
The issue extends beyond Illinois, with New Jersey also contemplating a significant tax hike from 14.25% to 30%. FanDuel, operating in both states, has joined the chorus of dissent, urging its Illinois customers to resist the tax hike.
Finding a Balance
While proponents argue that the tax hike could generate an additional $200 million in state revenue, critics, including FanDuel CEO Amy Howe, stress the importance of striking the right balance. Overly burdensome taxation risks stifling competition and driving bettors towards unregulated markets, undermining the integrity of the industry.
