New Jersey Establishes Responsible Gaming Task Force to Combat Gambling Addiction

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has signed Executive Order No. 360, creating the Responsible Gaming Task Force.

This advisory body is tasked with developing strategies to mitigate problem gambling and promote responsible gaming practices across the state.

Objectives and Leadership

The Responsible Gaming Task Force will provide periodic updates throughout the year, culminating in a comprehensive report by March 31, 2025.

Attorney General Matt Platkin will chair the task force, which will include six additional public officials from key state departments, such as the New Jersey Casino Control Commission and the Division of Gaming Enforcement.

Governor Murphy emphasized New Jersey’s leading role as a gaming hub, with attractions like Atlantic City and numerous amusement venues.

He highlighted the critical need to address problem gambling to maintain the state’s leadership in the gaming sector. Murphy noted that the task force’s mission is essential for safeguarding residents from the adverse effects of gambling addiction.

Alarming Statistics

The Governor’s Office referred to a 2023 report from the Rutgers University Center for Gambling Studies, which found that 6% of New Jersey residents are at high risk for problem gambling, significantly higher than the national average of 1-2%. This statistic underscores the urgent need for the task force’s work, especially in vulnerable communities, including Black and Hispanic populations.

Attorney General Platkin commended the initiative, acknowledging New Jersey’s pioneering status in casino and sports betting. He stressed the importance of responsible gaming, noting that it requires collaborative efforts from government, the gaming industry, and other stakeholders. As chair, Platkin is dedicated to exploring preventive and treatment strategies for gambling disorders, emphasizing that responsible gaming is a priority, not just a slogan.

The task force will review the impact of gambling on underage and vulnerable populations, develop strategies to promote responsible gaming, and propose policies to tackle gambling addiction. The body will also consult with experts and stakeholders from both public and private sectors to gain a well-rounded understanding of the issue.
