Wyoming Halts iGaming Legislation in Latest Legislative Session

This decision came to light following a House vote where the majority rejected the proposal to discuss iGaming legislation in 2024, with a vote tally of 25-36-1.

House Bill 120 Fails to Advance

The bill in question, House Bill 120, was introduced by Representative Robert Davis earlier in February but required the support of at least 42 representatives to move forward. This bill aimed to introduce a regulated framework for online gaming in the state, akin to the successful implementation of sports wagering.

Ahead of the vote, Rep. Davis highlighted the bill’s potential to address the unregulated iGaming market in Wyoming. He emphasized the importance of establishing protective measures for citizens engaging in online gaming activities, stating, “This bill does several important things. It begins to eradicate the illegal iGaming market right here in Wyoming. That activity is taking place without any protections for our citizens who are playing these games. … If we can install the guardrails to do this, it will roll out just like our sports wagering has.”

Concerns Over Regulation and Youth Protection

Contrarily, Rep. John Winter conveyed concerns from the Wyoming Gaming Commission regarding the rapid pace of gambling expansion and its potential impact on younger demographics.

The commission expressed apprehension about its readiness to regulate online casinos effectively, with Winter noting, “It’s my understanding that the gaming commission wants to shut this down. They think it’s going too fast and they’re concerned about the youngsters that have telephones that can do this gaming.”
