Washington DC Sets New Sports Betting Records in May
Washington DC’s sports betting sector achieved unprecedented success in May, with the total betting handle reaching $35.4 million—a staggering 183% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
The Dominance of FanDuel’s App
This surge in betting activity also resulted in record-high revenue of $5.4 million and generated tax receipts totaling $544,600, marking a significant milestone for the district’s betting industry.
FanDuel’s newly launched sports betting app for the DC Lottery captured a dominant share of the market, accounting for 84% of all sports wagers in Washington DC.
The DC Lottery registered $30.6 million in wagers, with $29.7 million of these placed through FanDuel’s app and an additional $898,671 through the older GambetDC app.
Other operators like Caesars and BetMGM trailed significantly, with $2.7 million and $1.6 million in wagers respectively.
Implications of the 2025 Budget
Looking forward, significant changes are expected in the competitive landscape of online sports betting within Washington DC.
The 2025 budget, recently approved by the Washington DC Council, introduces provisions that would end FanDuel’s exclusivity in the citywide market.
This legislative change, pending Mayor Muriel Bowser’s approval and a 30-day congressional review period, will enable BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook to extend their services beyond their physical sportsbook locations at Nationals Park and Capital One Arena respectively.
