Washington D.C. Opens Its Market, Creating More Options for Players

Starting Monday, players in Washington D.C. will have more options in mobile sports betting. BetMGM and Caesars are removing their geofences, making their offerings available throughout the district.

Washington D.C. Launches Competitive Market

Since Washington D.C. adopted a new budget last month that includes provisions for a competitive mobile sports betting market, commercial operators can now freely apply for a regulator’s license to operate in the district.

Previously, FanDuel held a monopoly in this area on behalf of the local lottery, paying a 40% tax for this privilege. Under the new legislative framework, operators will pay a 20% tax.

Currently, BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook are launching their operations in Washington D.C., taking advantage of having maintained limited digital platforms over the past few years. The geographic restrictions on their operations have now been lifted.

FanDuel Stays in the District

FanDuel will also maintain its presence in the district. Since April of this year, FanDuel has been acting as a subcontractor for the lottery provider Intralot. However, the contract between Intralot and the lottery expires on Monday, and the lottery will no longer offer sports betting.

FanDuel, owned by Flutter Entertainment, will now operate in partnership with Audi Field, home to DC United, DC Power FC, Washington Spirit, and the football team DC Defenders.
