Virginia’s Success in Addressing Problem Gambling Sets an Example for Other States

As Virginia has relaxed its gambling laws and expanded its gambling industry in recent years, the state has faced a significant rise in problem gambling. However, Virginia’s concerted efforts to address and treat gambling addiction have led to notable successes in curbing addiction rates.

Effective Treatment Programs and Increased Engagement

Carolyn Hawley, director of the Virginia Partnership for Gaming and Health, reported a staggering 973% increase in callers seeking help between 2019 and 2023.

This surge in outreach highlights the growing awareness and willingness of individuals to seek treatment for gambling addiction. The treatment system, developed in collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Rehabilitation Counseling, has proven effective in managing and reducing gambling addiction.

In the first quarter of 2024 alone, Hawley’s team received 166 referrals, with more than half of these individuals engaging in treatment. This success rate starkly contrasts with other programs across the United States, where typically only 4-10% of referrals result in treatment. The disparity is often due to a shortage of manpower, a challenge Virginia has addressed by creating a robust network of 105 providers.

High Success Rate and Positive Impact

One of the standout features of Virginia’s program is its remarkable success rate. An impressive 96% of individuals who received treatment reported that it helped them reduce or completely stop their gambling habits. This high rate of success underscores the effectiveness of the state’s approach to treating gambling addiction.

Carolyn Hawley expressed pride in the program’s achievements and believes that Virginia’s model could serve as an example for other states. “What we’re doing here in Virginia is truly remarkable, and we’re becoming a model for other states to follow,” said Hawley.

Despite the success, there are still concerns about the increasing number of individuals seeking treatment. However, the availability of effective treatment options offers some relief to affected families, particularly given the severe consequences of problem gambling, including related suicides.
