When playing Mega Millions, participants select five main numbers from a pool of 70 and one Mega Ball number from a pool of 25.
The jackpot is won when a player’s ticket matches all five main numbers and the Mega Ball. There are also multiple tiers of prizes for matching fewer numbers.
The prizes range from $2 for matching just the Mega Ball, up to $1 million for matching all five main numbers but not the Mega Ball.
If a player opts for the Megaplier feature and wins any prize other than the jackpot, their prize can be multiplied by 2, 3, 4, or 5 times, depending on the multiplier number drawn that evening.
Jackpot winners have the choice between an annuity and a cash option. The annuity provides annual payments over 30 years, with each payment increasing by 5% annually to cover inflation.
The cash option provides a one-time, lump-sum payment that is smaller than the total of the annuity payments but is paid out immediately.
