Terry Rozier Faces Federal Investigation Over Betting Allegations

31.01.2025

Federal prosecutors are investigating Terry Rozier for possible sports betting irregularities, focusing on his March 23, 2023, game between the Charlotte Hornets and New Orleans Pelicans. Authorities suspect that some bettors may have used inside information to place wagers on Rozier underperforming specific statistical benchmarks.

Suspicious Betting Activity Triggers Investigation

The investigation began after U.S. Integrity, a company that monitors betting patterns, flagged unusual wagers on Rozier’s performance. Many bets predicted that he would fail to meet certain stats, including total points scored.

Rozier played only nine minutes, scored five points, and left due to a foot injury. Despite his early exit, sportsbooks noticed a surge in bets on his underperformance, prompting some operators to remove related wagers from their offerings.

Possible Connection to a Larger Betting Scandal

Prosecutors are also looking into potential ties between this case and the Jontay Porter betting scandal. Porter, a former Toronto Raptors player, received a lifetime ban from the NBA for his role in betting-related violations. Investigators believe some of the same individuals involved in Porter’s case may have had access to insider information about Rozier.

Reports suggest that certain bettors knew in advance that Rozier would leave the game early. One gambler even claimed to have received “inside information” about Rozier’s limited playing time, which allowed them to place strategic bets on his underperformance.

Rozier Maintains Innocence

So far, Rozier has not been charged with any crime, and officials have not accused him of wrongdoing. The NBA previously reviewed the situation and found no violations of league rules. However, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York has now taken over the case and is conducting a more thorough investigation.

Authorities are also examining whether Rozier frequently exits games early and if this pattern has benefited bettors in the past. Although injuries are common in professional sports, the rise of legalized betting has made game integrity a growing concern.
