Scientific Games Secures Global Responsible Gaming Re-Certification from WLA
Scientific Games has once again earned the World Lottery Association’s Responsible Gaming Framework Certificate of Alignment, reinforcing its role as a leader in ethical gaming practices. Announced this week, the re-certification covers the company’s global operations and technology, spanning five continents and supporting 150 lotteries across 50 countries.

A High Bar Cleared
The WLA’s stamp isn’t easy to snag. Auditors dug into Scientific Games’ approach, from product development to marketing, assessing how well they weave responsible gaming into daily work.
Scientific Games not only meet but exceeds the WLA’s baseline standards. Mélissa Azam, the WLA’s Senior Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, praised their efforts. “We commend Scientific Games for unwavering dedication to responsible gaming continuous improvement through a commitment to education and awareness programs for operators and players, as well as ongoing and meaningful stakeholder engagement,” she said.
The company’s been at this for years. Back in 2015, its European arm was among the first globally to nab WLA certification. Multiple renewals followed, with a full global nod in 2022 tied to the launch of Healthy Play, a program blending science-driven tools and tech to boost “lottery literacy” and responsible play. This latest re-certification shows they’re not letting up.
Healthy Play at the Core
CEO Pat McHugh sees it as a milestone worth celebrating. “Scientific Games celebrates our WLA global re-certification as it re-affirms our steadfast commitment to responsible gaming innovation and ethical business practice across our operations and technology,” he said. He highlighted Healthy Play’s role, adding, “We are dedicated to advancing our Healthy Play program so that we can continue to give our lottery customers tools and best practices to strengthen the impact of their responsible gaming efforts by cultivating greater public trust through increased lottery literacy.”
Healthy Play’s the backbone here. It equips lotteries with features and strategies to cut harm and build trust, think player education and smarter platform design. The WLA audit flagged this integration as a standout, noting how it’s baked into everything from sales pitches to online tools.
The framework’s no light lift. It spans research, staff training, product creation, digital channels like iLottery, ads, client outreach, and reporting, every corner of the business gets a look. Scientific Games’ global scale makes this a big deal; with 150 lottery partners, their practices ripple wide. Exceeding WLA’s bar signals they’re not just checking boxes but setting a pace for the industry.
