Scientific Games Advocates for Maryland’s iLottery Initiative
In a significant move towards modernizing state lottery systems, Christine Wechsler, Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Government Affairs at Scientific Games, recently testified before the Maryland House Ways and Means Committee.
Her testimony underscored the company’s support for House Bill 1218, titled “State Lottery – Internet Sales Authorization and Distribution of Proceeds,” which aims to introduce online sales channels for the Maryland Lottery.
Embracing Modernization for Sustained Growth
Wechsler emphasized the critical need for the Maryland Lottery to adapt and evolve in line with contemporary consumer demands and the competitive landscape of gaming products.
“The Maryland Lottery is like all other businesses selling products to consumers – it must modernize to meet changing consumer demand,” Wechsler stated. This modernization is deemed essential not only for maintaining the Lottery’s significant annual profits, which exceed $714 million, but also for ensuring its future growth and sustainability.
Debunking iLottery Myths
A key part of Wechsler’s testimony was dedicated to addressing common misconceptions about iLottery systems. She highlighted that contrary to popular belief, iLottery does not cannibalize traditional brick-and-mortar retail sales. Evidence from the 12 U.S. states that currently offer online lottery sales supports this, showing that retail sales have actually grown faster in iLottery jurisdictions.
Furthermore, Wechsler pointed out that online sales platforms come equipped with robust player protection features, such as self-exclusion options, cooling-off periods, and deposit and play limits, promoting responsible lottery play.
iLottery and Casino Gaming: Complementary, Not Competitive
Wechsler also clarified that iLottery is intended to be an additional, convenient sales channel for lottery products, not a competitor to casino games. The successful coexistence of iLottery with other forms of gaming such as iCasino and sports betting in other states was cited as evidence of its complementary nature.
Scientific Games has been a long-standing partner to the Maryland Lottery, providing essential technology, systems, and services that support retail sales of lottery games. Wechsler reaffirmed the company’s dedication to supporting the Lottery’s growth both in retail and through potential online channels. “Our focus has always been on delivering solutions and services to facilitate retail growth and maximize profit returned to Maryland’s beneficiaries,” she added, highlighting the company’s readiness to assist in developing a successful iLottery framework for the state.
