Powerball is one of America’s largest and most popular lottery games, famous for producing record-breaking jackpots. The game requires players to match five white balls and one red Powerball. Winning results are released three times a week, giving players multiple chances to win prizes ranging from a few dollars to life-changing sums.

The most important information is to know when and how to check your numbers. Powerball drawings happen every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time (ET). You must buy your tickets before the cut-off time, which typically falls one or two hours before the draw, depending on your state.

How to Check Powerball Winning Numbers

After each draw, the official Powerball winning numbers are quickly released across many platforms. It is crucial to verify your ticket against the official state lottery results.

  1. Official Websites: Check the official Powerball website or your specific state lottery website. These sites post the winning numbers, the Power Play multiplier, and prize payouts for the draw.
  2. Retail Locations: Most places that sell tickets, such as gas stations and grocery stores, have a machine that can scan your ticket or a printout of the latest results.
  3. News and Media: Many local news stations and mobile lottery apps also publish the drawing results shortly after they occur.

Remember to check your ticket carefully. You do not need to match all six numbers to win a prize.

The Power Play Multiplier

For an extra per ticket, players can add the Power Play option. This multiplier can increase non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x. The 10x multiplier is available only when the advertised jackpot is million or less. The prize for matching five white balls is capped at million even with the Power Play option.

The Double Play Option

Some states offer the Double Play add-on for an additional . This enters your same numbers into a separate second drawing held shortly after the main Powerball draw. The top prize for the Double Play drawing is a non-rolling prize.

Historical Jackpots and Payment Options

Powerball is known for creating some of the largest lottery jackpots in U.S. history. The largest single-ticket jackpot was a  billion prize won in California in November 2022.

Winners of the jackpot prize can choose one of two ways to receive their money:

  1. Annuity Option: The full advertised jackpot amount is paid out in 30 graduated payments over 29 years. The payments increase each year.
  2. Cash Option: The winner receives a single, lump-sum payment. This amount is significantly less than the advertised jackpot total, but you get the full amount immediately. Most winners choose this option.

Both payment options have taxes deducted at the time of payout.
