Pennsylvania Sets Super Bowl Betting Record with $101.5 Million Handle

14.02.2025

Sports betting in Pennsylvania hit an all-time high during Super Bowl LIX, as bettors wagered $101.5 million on the matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. This is a 20.4% increase over the previous record set in 2023, when the same two teams faced off.

Despite the surge in wagers, sportsbooks ended up in the red, posting a $6.5 million loss—the first time in five years that the state’s operators reported negative revenue from Super Bowl betting.

Bettors Cash In on Eagles Victory

The Philadelphia Eagles’ 40-22 win over the Chiefs proved costly for sportsbooks. A high percentage of bets were placed on the Eagles to win, leading to substantial payouts that wiped out operator profits.

Retail sportsbooks lost $3.8 million, while online sportsbooks saw a $2.7 million deficit, resulting in the worst Super Bowl revenue performance for Pennsylvania operators since legalization.

The vast majority of bets were placed online, continuing a long-standing trend in Pennsylvania’s sports betting market. Online sportsbooks accounted for 91.2% of all wagers, with $92.6 million bet digitally, compared to $9 million wagered at retail locations.

Year-Over-Year Super Bowl Betting Growth

Pennsylvania’s sports betting market has grown dramatically since Super Bowl wagering became legal in 2019. This year’s $101.5 million handle smashed the previous record of $84.3 million set in 2023.

  • 2025: $101.5M (Philadelphia vs. Kansas City)
  • 2024: $71.5M (Kansas City vs. San Francisco)
  • 2023: $84.3M (Philadelphia vs. Kansas City)
  • 2022: $68M (Cincinnati vs. Los Angeles Rams)
  • 2021: $53.6M (Tampa Bay vs. Kansas City)
  • 2020: $30.7M (Kansas City vs. San Francisco)

While overall betting activity soared, Super Bowl profitability has fluctuated year to year. In 2023, sportsbooks recorded $29.7 million in revenue, while in 2024, they generated $11.1 million.

This year’s $6.5 million loss is a dramatic reversal, showing how bettor-friendly outcomes can impact operator profits.
