PENN Entertainment Launches Hollywood Casino App in Pennsylvania Ahead of Schedule
PENN Entertainment surprised the Pennsylvania gaming market this week with the early release of its standalone Hollywood Casino app. Originally slated for launch in early 2025, the app became available on December 18, 2024, well ahead of expectations.
Hollywood Casino App’s Features
The Hollywood Casino app is compatible with Android, iOS, and desktop devices, giving users multiple ways to access its offerings. With a catalog of over 700 games, a loyalty program integration, and a nod to PENN’s brick-and-mortar casino roots, the app is positioned as a significant player in Pennsylvania’s iGaming scene.
The Hollywood Casino app provides a comprehensive online gaming experience, catering to players with diverse interests:
- Extensive Game Library: Users can explore a wide selection of games, including slots, table games, and live dealer options.
- Casino Floor Lobby: A standout feature is the dedicated “Casino Floor,” designed to replicate the feel of a physical casino. Players can quickly find online versions of slot games they know from PENN’s retail locations.
- Exclusive Content: The app features unique titles developed by PENN Game Studios, the company’s in-house gaming studio, offering experiences not available elsewhere.
- Seamless Integration: The app works alongside PENN Play, the company’s loyalty program. This allows players to earn and redeem rewards across online and land-based activities, bridging the gap between virtual and in-person gaming.
- Shared Login with ESPN BET: Users of the ESPN BET sportsbook can log into the Hollywood Casino app with the same credentials, making it easier to move between sports betting and casino gaming.
Strategic Timing and Market Expansion
This early launch appears to be a calculated move by PENN Entertainment to strengthen its position in Pennsylvania before expanding to other jurisdictions in 2025. Pending regulatory approvals, the company plans to roll out the Hollywood Casino app in additional markets next year.
The timing is also significant given the company’s previous Hollywood Casino online offering in Pennsylvania, which operated in partnership with IGT until November 2023. That service was discontinued when PENN introduced its ESPN BET sportsbook in the state.
According to PENN Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden, the earlier version of Hollywood Casino achieved a high single-digit share of the iGaming market in Pennsylvania. With the new app’s advanced features and deeper integration with PENN’s ecosystem, Snowden expects even greater success, particularly through cross-selling opportunities between its online and retail offerings.
Why the App Matters
The Hollywood Casino app’s launch highlights several trends in the iGaming industry:
- Cross-Selling Potential: By integrating with PENN’s land-based casinos and the ESPN BET sportsbook, the app offers a seamless way to keep players engaged across platforms.
- Custom Experiences: Original content from PENN Game Studios gives the company a competitive edge, offering games tailored to its brand and audience.
- Flexibility for Players: With accessibility across devices and an easy-to-use interface, the app is designed to cater to both new and experienced gamers.
As PENN Entertainment prepares for the app’s expansion beyond Pennsylvania, the company is likely betting on its ability to replicate the success of its other ventures.
