North Carolina Hits $575 Million in Online Sports Betting Handle for September 2024

September 2024 was a big month for North Carolina’s online sports betting market and it was all thanks to the NFL season starting.

Sharp Jump in Volume

After a quiet summer, betting activity exploded and the state’s total online sports betting handle was $575.4 million. That’s the 3rd highest since North Carolina launched online sports betting in March 2024, behind only March and April.

September’s handle was up 55% from August, as betting interest picked up with the return of major sports, specifically football. The state is getting close to new records and it’s clear football is the driver of betting activity.

Tax Revenue Up

September’s gross sports betting revenue was $70.1 million, the 2nd highest since online betting launched in the state. That’s more than double August’s $33.8 million and almost as much as July and August combined.

The operators’ hold for the month was 13.0%, 2nd highest on record behind April’s 16.2%.

Even with sportsbooks offering big promotional credits to attract bettors before the NFL season, North Carolina’s tax revenue from online sports betting more than doubled from August to September and hit $12 million.

That’s a sign the state is getting more and more revenue from the growing online sports betting market.
