NFL Nears Landmark Deal to Take Equity Stake in ESPN, Reports Say
The National Football League is reportedly on the verge of a landmark media deal that would give it an equity stake of up to 10% in ESPN. The agreement, which has been in the works for four years, would also transfer control of NFL Media’s key assets, including the NFL Network and NFL RedZone, to the Disney-owned sports giant.

A “Complicated” Four-Year Negotiation
The deal, which is expected to be announced as early as next week, is the result of a long and “complicated” negotiation process. In exchange for what could be a multi-billion dollar equity stake, the NFL will hand over the keys to its media empire to ESPN, a move that signals a major strategic shift for the league.
For years, the NFL has struggled to fully monetize its own media properties. The league has recently seen layoffs of key personnel and the cancellation of its flagship show, NFL Total Access. This new partnership will allow the NFL to offload the operational responsibilities of its media arm while still retaining significant financial upside through its ownership stake in ESPN.
A Game-Changer for ESPN’s Streaming Future
For ESPN, the deal is a massive strategic victory that will significantly bolster its upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service. The new service, which will also be named ESPN, is set to launch at a price point of $29.99 per month and is the cornerstone of the company’s future.
By acquiring control of the NFL Network, the wildly popular NFL RedZone, and an additional seven regular-season games, ESPN is adding an arsenal of must-have content to its streaming lineup. The deal also includes the NFL’s fantasy football business, which provides another powerful tool for user acquisition and engagement.
The landmark agreement is not a done deal yet. It will require regulatory approval, a process that could take up to a year. The deal also raises significant ethical questions for ESPN’s journalism.
With the NFL as a part-owner, the network will inevitably face scrutiny over its ability to provide unbiased coverage of the league.
