NFL Extends Partnership with National Council on Problem Gambling

The National Football League (NFL) has renewed its partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), extending its support with a three-year, $6.4 million grant.

Strengthening Key Initiatives

This commitment builds upon an earlier $6.2 million grant awarded in 2021, representing the largest in NCPG’s history. The NFL’s renewed funding will support three central NCPG initiatives:

1. National Problem Gambling Helpline Modernization: Enhancing the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline by upgrading technology, improving nationwide access, and expanding staffing to ensure high-quality care for those seeking help.

2. Agility Grants Program: The first national initiative targeting underserved communities with problem gambling prevention programs, focusing on at-risk groups such as middle school and college students.

3. Awareness Campaigns: Expanding outreach efforts, including continued development of the ResponsiblePlay.org website, which educates the public on responsible gambling and connects those in need with resources.

Impact of the NFL-NCPG Partnership

Since the original grant in 2021, the National Problem Gambling Helpline has seen significant upgrades, including US-wide licensing of the 1-800-GAMBLER number.

This change streamlined access across states and helped increase helpline usage by 104% between 2020 and 2023. The data collected through these efforts has bolstered NCPG’s ability to advocate for federal funding and improve prevention and treatment programs.

The Agility Grants Program has provided nearly $1 million to support 26 problem gambling prevention initiatives across 17 states. These projects have reached over 40,000 individuals, focusing on both primary and secondary prevention in high-risk populations, such as youth and communities disproportionately affected by gambling-related harm..

NFL Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility Anna Isaacson emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “We are proud to leverage our platform and resources with NCPG’s expertise to raise awareness, provide education, and help prevent problem gambling.” The NFL’s ongoing support underscores its commitment to ensuring the integrity of the growing sports betting industry while addressing the critical need for responsible gambling initiatives.

As problem gambling becomes a growing concern in the context of legalized sports betting, the NFL’s extended partnership with NCPG represents a significant step in safeguarding the well-being of bettors and ensuring responsible gaming practices.
