New York Senate Passes Bill to Educate Public on Gambling Dangers
The New York Senate has unanimously passed Assembly Bill 1118, aimed at educating the public about the harmful effects of gambling. The bill, introduced by Assemblyman Clyde Vanel and co-sponsored by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, received a 57-0 vote in favor.
Objectives of Assembly Bill 1118
AB 1118 seeks to amend the existing laws related to racing, pari-mutuel wagering, and breeding.
The bill mandates that all gambling and sports betting advertisements must include warnings about the potential harmful and addictive effects of gambling.
This measure ensures that marketing practices for gambling are safe and responsible.
Responsibilities of the NYSGC
Under the new legislation, the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) is required to provide advertising guidelines on its website.
Additionally, the NYSGC must work in collaboration with the commissioner of addiction services to ensure that all gaming advertisements include a problem gambling hotline.
Having passed the Senate, AB 1118 will now proceed to the House for further consideration. With New York’s current legislative session ending on June 6, lawmakers will need to act swiftly to advance the bill.
