New York Lawmakers Revive Efforts to Legalize Online Poker
New York has a long history of attempts to legalize online poker, with efforts dating back to a bill filed by Assemblyman Gary Pretlow a decade ago. Although that initial proposal did not gain traction, it laid the groundwork for future legislative efforts aimed at expanding gambling in the state.
Introduction of Senate Bill S9226
Senator Joseph Addabbo, a longstanding advocate for gambling expansion in New York, has introduced Senate Bill S9226.
The new proposal specifically targets the legalization of internet poker, focusing on popular variants such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha Hold’em.
It aims to authorize the New York State Gaming Commission to license entities to offer these poker games to the public.
Addabbo’s proposal highlights the skill-based nature of these games, differentiating them from other forms of gambling that rely more heavily on chance.
Current Status and Legislative Challenges
Currently, Senate Bill S9226 is under review by the Senate’s Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee. Given that it was introduced late in the legislative session, its chances of advancing this year are slim. Senator Addabbo has acknowledged this timing issue, noting that the bill was introduced to gauge interest and to refine its provisions for future consideration.
In an interview with PlayNY, Senator Addabbo expressed hope for the bill’s future, indicating that it might gain more support in the next legislative session.
He emphasized the importance of updating the bill to reflect current realities and to generate renewed interest among lawmakers and stakeholders.
