Nevada Leads the Nation in Per-Capita Sports Betting

02.01.2025

While other states have overtaken Nevada in overall sports betting revenue, the Silver State maintains its crown in per-capita betting. A recent study by Gamdom Casino revealed that Nevada residents wager three times more on sports than the average American.

Nevada’s Per-Capita Dominance

According to the Gamdom study, the average bettor in Nevada is expected to place $1,815 in sports bets in 2024. This amount is significantly higher than the national average and nearly three times the figures for most states. In comparison, bettors in New Jersey wagered $1,398, while New Yorkers bet $1,087 on average.

Despite these high per-capita figures, Nevada ranks only fifth in sports betting revenue, trailing behind Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. However, the state still outpaces Illinois and Pennsylvania in terms of betting handle.

Surprising Trends in the Rankings

Nevada’s position as the leader in per-capita betting is particularly striking given the state’s in-person registration requirements for online betting. Additionally, major operators like FanDuel and DraftKings are not available in Nevada, making its dominance in this category all the more noteworthy.

Another surprising finding from the study is Pennsylvania’s low rank in per-capita betting. Despite being a top revenue generator, it placed 19th in per-capita betting, with an average spend of just $484.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, South Dakota recorded the lowest per-capita betting figures among the 38 states and Washington, DC, where sports betting is legal.

Gamdom’s Observations on Betting Trends

Felix Romer, founder of Gamdom Casino, highlighted the disparity between revenue and per-capita rankings. In a statement to The Las Vegas Review-Journal, he described the data as “quite astounding,” emphasizing the significant differences between these metrics.
