MLB Probes Alleged Gambling Violations by Five Players
Major League Baseball (MLB) is investigating allegations that five players violated the league’s gambling regulations. The investigation follows recent events such as the case involving Ippei Mizuhara, accused of stealing from MLB star Shohei Ohtani to pay gambling debts, and Jontay Porter’s lifetime ban from basketball for similar infractions.
Players Under Scrutiny
Among those under investigation is Tucupita Marcano of the San Diego Padres. Accusations suggest that while Marcano was with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he bet on games, including times when he was on the disabled list.
Marcano could face severe consequences, potentially a lifetime ban from MLB, reminiscent of Porter’s situation in the NBA.
The Padres have publicly acknowledged MLB’s investigation, emphasizing that the alleged incidents took place during Marcano’s time with another team. The organization has opted not to comment further until the investigation concludes.
Impact on Other Players
In addition to Marcano, four other players are being examined for similar violations, primarily from their periods in minor league baseball. MLB’s gambling policy allows players to legally bet on sports outside of baseball.
However, betting on baseball games, even those not involving their team, can result in a one-year suspension. Betting on games involving their own team can lead to a lifetime ban.
