MLB Launches Investigation into Allegations Against Former Angels Infielder David Fletcher
Major League Baseball (MLB) has initiated an investigation into allegations that former Los Angeles Angels infielder David Fletcher engaged in illegal sports betting.
The allegations, reported by ESPN, claim that Fletcher, now playing for the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, placed bets on sports through Southern California bookmaker Mathew Bowyer. Notably, the bets reportedly did not include baseball games.
Connection to Ohtani’s Interpreter
The investigation is further complicated by the involvement of Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani’s longtime interpreter, who has also been implicated in the betting activities facilitated by Bowyer.
Fletcher’s close friend, Colby Schultz, a former minor league player, is alleged to have bet on baseball, including on games involving the Angels while Fletcher was part of the team.
A challenge for MLB investigators is obtaining concrete evidence of Fletcher’s alleged betting activities. Cooperation from government authorities is deemed crucial for progressing the investigation.
An MLB source emphasized the importance of such cooperation, stating, “Government cooperation will be crucial in a case like this where we don’t have evidence.”
Potential Legal and Disciplinary Actions
MLB investigators plan to request an interview with Fletcher, though he has the right to refuse cooperation, especially if he might be the subject of a criminal investigation.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Fletcher continues to play for the Gwinnett Stripers. He recently participated in games, including making an unusual relief pitching appearance.
ESPN’s sources indicate that if Fletcher is found to have bet illegally on non-baseball sports, he would likely face a fine rather than a suspension. However, any connection to betting on baseball could result in severe penalties, including a potential lifetime ban.
