Massachusetts Weighs Action Against Offshore Sports Betting Operator Bovada
Massachusetts is contemplating measures similar to those recently enacted by Michigan to combat unregulated offshore sports betting operators like Bovada.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) recently issued a cease-and-desist letter to Bovada, demanding the cessation of their operations within the state.
AGA’s Advocacy and Concerns
This action has received strong support from the American Gaming Association (AGA), which is urging other states, including Massachusetts, to take similar steps against illegal offshore gambling sites.
The AGA has long been advocating for a crackdown on offshore operators, citing significant revenue losses and consumer risks associated with these unregulated platforms.
AGA President Bill Miller praised Michigan’s initiative, calling it a critical step in protecting consumers and ensuring the integrity of the legal gambling market.
He has called on other states to follow Michigan’s example to safeguard their residents and their legal gaming industries.
Massachusetts’ Considerations
While Massachusetts has not yet issued a formal cease-and-desist order to Bovada, discussions are actively underway. The state’s deliberations are heavily influenced by the precedent set by Michigan and the broader push from the AGA to tackle illegal offshore gambling more effectively.
Massachusetts officials recognize the potential benefits of such measures in terms of consumer protection and revenue retention.
Bovada stands out as one of the leading black-market sports betting operators in the US, already banned in five states. Regulators in Michigan and Connecticut have recently intensified efforts to exclude the platform from their markets.
If Massachusetts proceeds with actions against Bovada, it could mark a crucial step in the broader national effort to curtail illegal offshore betting operations.
