Massachusetts Sports Betting Hits Record High in September
September marked a record-breaking month for legal sports betting operators in Massachusetts since the state legalized betting in early 2023.
Operators Collect $73.5 Million in Taxable Revenue
According to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, sportsbooks and mobile betting platforms generated about $73.5 million in taxable revenue, surpassing the previous high of $71.13 million set in January 2024.
Bettors also set a new record last month, wagering approximately $678.75 million on various sporting events, exceeding the prior monthly handle record of $658.7 million from December 2023.
The overwhelming majority—97 percent—of bets were placed via the state’s seven mobile or online betting platforms, with DraftKings capturing more than half of the total bets.
Online operators also accounted for more than 98 percent of the revenue generated in September.
Tax Contributions and Revenue Breakdown
The substantial betting activity contributed about $14.63 million to the state’s revenue for September. Massachusetts taxes online sports wagering revenue at a rate of 20 percent, while physical sportsbooks at Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor face a 15 percent tax rate.
In addition to sports betting, the state’s three traditional casinos generated over $92 million in gross gaming revenue last month, which equates to roughly $26.24 million in state taxes. Combined, all gambling activities licensed by the commission generated more than $165.55 million in revenue for operators, with the state collecting just over $40.87 million in taxes.
