Massachusetts Gaming Commission Seeks Research on AI and Technology in Gambling Industry

Research Priorities

The Gaming Policy Advisory Council of the MGC has outlined two key research priorities that address pressing concerns for the future of gambling in Massachusetts:

1.Impact of Online Casino Gaming

The first study will involve a third-party organization investigating the effects of online casino gaming on public health. This research will delve into potential connections between online gaming and gambling-related harm, with a specific focus on the impact on younger players. The goal is to understand the broader implications of online gambling and develop strategies to mitigate any negative effects.

2.Role of AI in Enhancing the Gambling Industry

The second research priority aims to explore how AI can benefit the state’s gambling industry. This includes examining how AI can improve marketing strategies and player acquisition for operators. Additionally, the study will assess AI’s potential in supporting responsible gambling policies and protecting players from harm. The commission is particularly interested in how AI can uphold the integrity of the industry while enhancing player safety.

Project Details

The MGC has allocated a budget of $75,000 for these studies, indicating that these will be smaller-scale projects compared to some of the more extensive research efforts undertaken in the past. Despite their size, these projects are expected to provide valuable insights that can inform future regulatory and operational decisions within the state’s gambling sector.

By commissioning these studies, the MGC aims to: gain a deeper understanding of the public health implications of online casino gaming as well as explore innovative ways in which AI can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of gambling operations.
