March 2025 Marks Problem Gambling Awareness Month. NCPG Promotes ‘Seeking Understanding’ Theme
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has announced the official observance of Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) throughout March 2025. Under the theme “Seeking Understanding,” this year’s initiative aims to shed light on problem gambling as a serious yet frequently misunderstood mental health condition. By fostering greater public awareness, PGAM seeks to break down barriers to care, encourage open discussions, and promote access to critical support resources.

The Scope of Problem Gambling in the U.S.
While gambling is a widely accepted form of entertainment, problem gambling remains a significant and often overlooked public health concern. According to NCPG, approximately 2.5 million U.S. adults struggle with severe gambling problems, while an additional 5 to 8 million experience mild to moderate gambling-related issues.
Often referred to as a “hidden addiction,” problem gambling disrupts individuals’ lives, careers, and relationships, leading to profound emotional, financial, and social consequences.
Cait Huble, NCPG’s Director of Communications, underscored the urgency of raising awareness: “Problem gambling is often described as a ‘hidden addiction,’ and with an estimated 9 million Americans affected, the need for awareness and support has never been greater. By fostering a deeper understanding of the issue, we can encourage empathy, reduce barriers to treatment, and provide support to those affected by gambling-related harm.”
Expanding Awareness and Support Networks
Throughout March, local and national organizations will collaborate to host events, offer educational workshops, and drive advocacy efforts focused on two key goals: increasing public awareness of problem gambling and improving access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services.
Healthcare providers are also encouraged to screen clients for gambling-related issues, ensuring that those in need receive timely and effective support.
A diverse coalition of stakeholders, including public health organizations, advocacy groups, professional sports leagues, and gambling operators, will participate in PGAM initiatives.
