Iowa Sports Betting Sees Strong August Performance with $167 Million in Handle

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission reported a total August handle of $167 million, which is $26 million more than the same period last year.

Online Betting Continues to Lead

Although impressive, August’s handle fell short of Iowa’s record high of $272 million set in March 2024. However, the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) for August reached $15.8 million.

The internet handle accounted for $156.1 million of the total bets placed in August, showing a strong preference among Iowans for online betting. Of the $151.2 million in total winnings collected by players, a vast majority—$143.1 million—came from online wagers.

Tax Revenue Supports State Programs

Iowa’s sports betting industry contributed approximately $1.1 million in taxes in August.

Since the legalization of sports betting following the repeal of the federal ban by the U.S. Supreme Court, Iowa has seen steady growth in both handle and revenue, providing a reliable income stream for public services and programs.
