Global Coalition Launches ‘Gift Responsibly Campaign’ to Combat Youth Gambling Risks

In an unprecedented global initiative, 66 lotteries and 84 community organizations have united for the 2023 Gift Responsibly Campaign.

Spearheaded by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviours at McGill University, the campaign focuses on the risks of youth gambling. A key aspect of this initiative is to discourage the gifting of lottery tickets to minors during the holiday season, a practice that has raised concerns about its potential impact on young people’s gambling behaviors.

Campaign Strategies and Objectives

The coalition’s approach involves a variety of communication channels to spread its message effectively. Public service announcements, social media campaigns, digital advertising, and in-store messaging are all part of this concerted effort.

Additionally, retailer training is being conducted to reinforce the message that lottery products should not be considered appropriate gifts for children.

Expert Opinions

Jeffrey Derevensky, the Director of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviours, emphasized the importance of the campaign. He noted the increasing social acceptability and accessibility of gambling and stressed the vulnerability of young people to gambling-related problems. The Gift Responsibly Campaign serves as a critical reminder to adults about the inappropriateness of gifting lottery tickets to minors.

This year’s campaign is notable for its widespread participation. All eligible US and Canadian lotteries have joined for the sixth consecutive year, along with numerous international lotteries and non-lottery organizations. The initiative has also garnered endorsements from influential bodies such as the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, the World Lottery Association, and the European Lotteries.

NCPG’s Continued Efforts

Keith Whyte, the NCPG Executive Director, applauded the commitment of the participating lotteries and community organizations. He highlighted the campaign’s role in enhancing public awareness and understanding of the potential risks associated with youth gambling.

In line with its ongoing efforts to address problem gambling, the NCPG recently announced its Fall 2023 Agility Grants. This funding, totaling $176,000, is earmarked for five non-profit organizations in the US that are dedicated to tackling gambling issues.

Our Comment on the Article

The Gift Responsibly Campaign represents a significant stride in addressing the often-overlooked issue of youth gambling. By bringing together a broad coalition of lotteries and community organizations, the campaign underscores the collective responsibility of society in protecting minors from the risks of gambling.

This initiative not only raises awareness about the unsuitability of lottery products as gifts for children but also contributes to a larger discourse on responsible gambling practices. The campaign’s widespread endorsement and the NCPG’s grant initiative are testaments to the growing recognition of the need for concerted efforts to address gambling-related problems, particularly among vulnerable youth populations.
