Georgia Still Awaits Legal Sports Betting: 42,000 Geolocation Checks During NFL Week 11
GeoComply, a geolocation technology company, has reported a significant spike in attempts to place sports bets by players from Georgia, highlighting the state’s ongoing struggle to legalize sports betting.

A Record for Sports Betting in Georgia
On Sunday, during NFL Week 11, GeoComply recorded over 42,000 geolocation checks from Georgia-based players attempting to access legal sports betting platforms in other states. This marks a 105% increase compared to the same NFL weekend last year.
The data underscores the growing demand for legal sports betting in Georgia and the untapped potential of the state’s market. Allowing residents to bet legally within state lines and inviting commercial operators could boost tax revenues and bring other benefits associated with recognized industry brands.
Legal Sports Betting in Georgia?
Lawmakers have made multiple attempts to legalize sports betting in the state, but political disputes—primarily between parties—have hindered progress.
One of the major obstacles is disagreement over the legalization process. Some legislators argue that it requires a constitutional amendment, which would need a two-thirds majority vote—a challenging feat given the partisan divide.
In 2024, a proposed bill outlined the creation of 16 licenses for online sports betting platforms, including eight tied to the state’s professional sports teams.
However, debates over a constitutional amendment and a lack of consensus on how to allocate potential tax revenue have significantly reduced the bill’s chances of success.
