Flutter Entertainment Strengthens Board with Former Disney Exec

02.07.2024

Flutter Entertainment has announced the addition of two new members to its board of directors, including former Walt Disney Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy.

Christine McCarthy’s Background

Christine McCarthy is a seasoned entertainment executive with a distinguished career at The Walt Disney Company. She joined Disney in 2000 and held several senior leadership roles, culminating in her position as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

During her tenure, McCarthy was instrumental in various strategic initiatives and managed corporate real estate, alliances, and treasury functions. Most recently, she served as a Strategic Advisor at Disney before stepping down in June 2023 to take family medical leave.

McCarthy’s departure from Disney was not without controversy. Reports indicated that she clashed with Disney CEO Bob Iger over the company’s cost management strategies. Despite official statements citing family medical leave as the reason for her resignation, some speculated that her departure was influenced by internal disagreements regarding content cost reductions.

Expanding Flutter’s Board

With the addition of McCarthy and Robert R. (“Dob”) Bennett, Flutter’s board expands from nine to eleven members. This expansion is part of Flutter’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its leadership and governance.

McCarthy’s appointment is particularly notable as she becomes the fifth woman on Flutter’s board, reflecting the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

McCarthy’s extensive experience in the entertainment industry is expected to provide Flutter with critical insights, particularly in areas related to financial strategy and corporate governance. Her tenure at Disney saw her navigate complex financial landscapes and drive strategic initiatives that aligned with the company’s long-term goals.

Despite her accomplishments, McCarthy has faced public criticism. In 2021, during a Disney earnings call, she suggested that reducing meal portions at the company’s theme parks could lower costs and benefit visitors’ waistlines. This comment was met with backlash, highlighting the sensitivities involved in corporate communication and customer relations.
