Final Co-Conspirator in Jontay Porter Gambling Scandal Surrenders
Ammar Awawdeh, the final co-conspirator involved in the gambling scheme that led to former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter’s lifetime ban from the NBA, has surrendered to authorities.
Details of the Alleged Scheme
Awawdeh’s arrest comes amid allegations that he, along with three other co-defendants, encouraged Porter to withdraw from games to settle his significant gambling debts.
According to a criminal complaint filed in a New York District Court, Awawdeh, Long Phi Pham, Timothy McCormack, and Mahmud Mollah conspired to help Porter cover his gambling losses by advising him to manipulate game participation. The group faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Bail and Legal Proceedings
Awawdeh was arraigned and released on a $100,000 bond, under home detention. Similarly, McCormack and Mollah were each released on $50,000 bonds.
Pham remains under home detention with ankle monitoring after posting a $750,000 bond.
While Porter has not yet been charged, he is reported to have incurred substantial gambling debts through illegal betting activities. His attorney, Jeff Jensen, has highlighted Porter’s cooperation with law enforcement and his ongoing treatment for gambling addiction.
