FanDuel’s Monopoly Ends as BetMGM and Caesars Set to Launch Mobile Betting in D.C.

11.07.2024

The mobile sports betting landscape in Washington D.C. is about to undergo another transformation with BetMGM and Caesars set to launch their services citywide on Monday. This expansion means the end of FanDuel’s short-lived monopoly in the district, bringing more options to local bettors.

Launch Events and Operational Details

BetMGM has announced plans to celebrate its citywide launch at Nationals Park on Monday at noon ET, signaling a promotional push.

Caesars is also scheduled to go live across the district on the same day. Both launches are contingent upon the completion of final testing phases to ensure operational readiness.

Up until now, both BetMGM and Caesars have been restricted to mobile wagering within a two-block radius of their respective physical sportsbooks—Nationals Park for BetMGM and Capital One Arena for Caesars.

Regulatory Background

These expansions are possible due to both companies having already navigated the regulatory landscape through their physical sportsbook operations, which provided them a head start over potential new entrants.

FanDuel, meanwhile, has been operational in D.C. for under three months, offering online and mobile wagers after taking over from GambetDC as the subcontractor for Intralot. FanDuel also has market access via a retail sportsbook partnership with the D.C. United soccer team at Audi Field.

The broader market opening is a result of recent legislative changes led by D.C. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie. These changes, incorporated into the D.C. budget that takes effect Monday, have paved the way for a more competitive and diversified sports betting environment within the district.

The entry of BetMGM and Caesars is likely just the beginning, with other major players such as Fanatics Sportsbook and DraftKings also showing interest in expanding their online sports betting presence in D.C. earlier this year.
