FanDuel Set to Take Over D.C. Sports Betting from GambetDC by Mid-April

In Washington D.C., the much-criticized GambetDC app is being phased out to make way for industry giant FanDuel. This strategic shift, slated for April 15, comes after a mere two weeks following the agreement with FanDuel.

FanDuel’s takeover isn’t just a name change; it’s an overhaul of the existing system, including the rebranding of GambetDC’s betting kiosks. Until April 14, GambetDC will continue to accept wagers, after which all operations will transition to FanDuel, signaling a new era of sports betting in the capital.

Transition Challenges and Opportunities

However, the transition to FanDuel comes with its set of logistical challenges. Notably, user accounts will not be transferred automatically. Bettors are required to manually withdraw their funds from GambetDC and deposit them into their new FanDuel accounts. This process is open until October 15, the same day GambetDC will officially deactivate all remaining accounts.

Furthermore, the fate of futures bets placed through GambetDC has been carefully considered. Bets made before the April 15 cutoff will be honored until they settle, provided the settlement occurs before July 1. Any futures extending beyond this date will be refunded, ensuring a fair resolution for bettors amidst the transition.

Expanding D.C.’s Sports Betting Ecosystem

In tandem with FanDuel’s entry, there’s a buzz around potential expansions in the D.C. sports betting scene. A city councilor has hinted at the possible online debut of BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook, leveraging existing retail footprints at local sports venues as a springboard for online operations.

A bill proposing this expansion is already on the table, setting the stage for a more dynamic and competitive betting environment in Washington D.C.
