FanDuel Launches in Washington D.C. as GambetDC Closes Its Doors
GambetDC, once the sole sports betting app operated by D.C.’s Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG), has officially ceased operations, making way for FanDuel to take over as the district’s primary sports wagering provider. This change follows an agreement facilitated earlier in the month, solidifying FanDuel’s position in the capital.
The transition includes rebranding existing GambetDC kiosks and establishing FanDuel branded locations. OLG executive director Frank Suarez highlighted that FanDuel’s “industry-leading offering” is expected to maximize tax revenue and improve the betting experience for residents over 18.
Details of the Transition
The switch to FanDuel requires active involvement from bettors, as accounts and funds from GambetDC will not automatically transfer to the new system.
Users need to manually withdraw their funds from GambetDC by October 15, when GambetDC will deactivate remaining accounts.
In terms of wagers, all open bets for events post-June 30 will be canceled and refunded, while bets placed before the April 15 transition will be honored if their outcomes are determined by July 1.
The switch will also see a phased transition of in-person retail locations to FanDuel branding, expected to complete by year-end.
Future of Sports Betting in D.C.
The entry of FanDuel into the D.C. market may soon be followed by other major players like BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook, as indicated by recent discussions within the city council.
These developments could expand the sports betting ecosystem in Washington D.C., introducing more competition and potentially benefiting consumers with better odds and service offerings.
A bill proposing the expansion of licensed operators using existing retail footprints at local sports venues as online operation bases is currently on the table, setting the stage for an enriched sports betting environment in the nation’s capital.
