Betr Secures Maryland Sports Betting License

Microbetting platform Betr has been awarded a sports wagering license in Maryland following a meeting of the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) on June 26.

Current Operations and Expansion

Betr, co-owned by YouTube star and boxer Jake Paul and entrepreneur Joey Levy, is currently live in Ohio and Virginia. The company had previously exited the Massachusetts market earlier this year.

Additionally, Betr holds a temporary license in Indiana but has yet to launch there.

In May, Maryland’s lottery commission approved Betr’s wagering license. However, in Maryland, only SWARC has the authority to issue the actual license, which it has now done.

Regulatory Process

Betr’s entry into Maryland comes at a time of change in the local market, with BetFred exiting and Veterans Services Corporation (VSC) preparing to launch on July 1.

VSC, a British-based company operating via Bee-Fee Limited, has prior experience in the US market as a subcontractor for Intralot in Washington, DC.

Despite being a smaller player in the betting industry, Betr has managed to find success in crowded markets. The company’s focus on microbetting, which involves wagering on specific outcomes within games, differentiates it from more traditional sports betting platforms and appeals to a niche audience.
