Arizona Opens Licensing for Additional Sports Betting Operators

The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) announced it will reopen its licensing process for event wagering licenses from July 8 to July 19.

The ADG plans to issue at least one new sports betting license for Arizona tribes and another for Arizona sports teams.

Current Licensing Landscape

Arizona is authorized to issue a maximum of 20 sports betting licenses. As of now, 17 of these slots are filled—eight tied to sports teams and nine to tribes. When the online sports wagering market launched in September 2021, all available tribal licenses were allocated.

Over the past two and a half years, some operators have exited the market, freeing up licensing slots. Notable departures include Fubo, WynnBET, Unibet, and TwinSpires.

These vacancies have been quickly filled by other operators:

Bet365 took over Fubo’s license in partnership with the Ak-Chin Indian Community, launching in February.

Fanatics Sportsbook began operations in April through an agreement with the Tonto Apache Tribe, maxing out the 10 sportsbook licenses tethered to tribal partners.

Upcoming Opportunities

With the licensing process reopening, Arizona will add at least one more license to the pool reserved for tribal operators.

Additionally, the state currently has eight of the 10 licenses tied to sports teams in use, meaning the new allocation will soon leave three licenses available.
