The American Gaming Association (AGA) has issued an updated version of its Best Practices for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Compliance Guide, offering the U.S. gaming sector refreshed direction on how to keep pace with new laws, technology, and criminal tactics.

Why the Update Matters

The revised guide shows the industry’s role in protecting the U.S. financial system and the people who work and play in casinos.

Alex Costello, AGA Vice President of Government Relations, said, “Maintaining up-to-date AML policies is essential to safeguarding the gaming industry’s operations, employees, and customers – and to protecting the integrity of the U.S. financial system. We encourage all casino operators and suppliers to use this resource to continually refine their practices as both the industry and threat environment change.”

What’s New in the 2025 Edition

The new version incorporates several additions aimed at modernizing compliance:

  • Enhanced KYC and SAR guidance to help operators strengthen customer due diligence and reporting.

  • Risk assessment framework aligned with regulatory expectations to guide internal reviews.

  • Expanded coverage of online activity, digital wallets and cryptocurrency to address emerging payment methods.

  • New red-flag typologies to help staff recognize suspicious behavior tied to fraud or illicit finance.

  • Dedicated section on human trafficking risks linked to money laundering, with practical steps for detection and escalation.

Since the last update in 2022, more than 1,000 land-based casinos now operate in the U.S., ten states have legalized sports betting, and one has legalized iGaming. That expansion has been matched by stronger compliance programs, with the legal, state-regulated gaming industry recognized as a leader in AML efforts. The AGA continues to work closely with regulators, law enforcement, and compliance experts to raise standards as the threat environment evolves.
