25.02.2025

Pennsylvania’s sports betting industry started 2025 with a mix of highs and lows. The total sports betting handle for January reached $873.1 million, a 1.75% year-over-year increase. However, despite the higher betting volume, taxable revenue dropped 26.35% to $51.5 million.

Online vs. Retail Sports Betting Performance

As expected, online sportsbooks dominated the market, generating $49.2 million in revenue. Retail sportsbooks, operating from casinos and other physical locations, contributed only $2.3 million.

Among casino operators, Valley Forge Casino Resort led the pack with $342.3 million in betting handle and $28.8 million in revenue. However, this was a 27.2% drop from January 2024, when the casino earned $39.6 million.

Similarly, Hollywood Casino at the Meadows reported $221 million in handle and $15 million in revenue, a 21.28% decline year-over-year.

Not all operators saw losses. Wind Creek Bethlehem recorded a 19.5% revenue increase, while Live! Casino Pittsburgh saw an impressive 147.54% surge, making it one of the strongest performers of the month.

Fantasy Sports and Other Developments

The fantasy sports sector performed well, with DraftKings leading the market. The company reported $1.47 million in revenue, a 6.4% increase from the previous year.

Meanwhile, ESPN Bet and Hollywood Casino York struggled, reporting a $1.8 million loss for the month.

In a separate development, BetMGM faced regulatory penalties from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB). The company was fined $260,605 for 152 violations related to the state’s interactive self-exclusion list, which allows individuals to voluntarily ban themselves from gambling platforms.
