New Jersey Bill Could Let Esports Players Bet on Themselves

25.02.2025

New Jersey is moving to expand its esports betting market with Bill A2172, which would allow players to bet on themselves in sanctioned competitions.

What Does the Bill Propose?

Bill A2172 allows licensed sportsbooks and online operators to accept wagers on esports competitions while ensuring regulatory oversight. The New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety would approve all esports betting markets.

A key provision lets esports players bet on themselves or their teams when competing in casinos, racetracks, or approved venues in Atlantic City. Few states have considered such a policy.

The bill also permits sportsbook operators to launch dedicated esports betting platforms. They could create two separate mobile apps or websites focused exclusively on esports wagering. However, before allowing bets on out-of-state events, officials must grant approval.

Integrity Measures and Industry Impact

To prevent match-fixing or insider manipulation, the bill includes strict integrity requirements. Venues hosting esports events must get third-party verification, such as approval from the game’s publisher, to confirm compliance with state gaming laws.

Legalizing esports betting under a structured framework could boost gaming-related revenue and make New Jersey a major hub for competitive gaming.

The bill also offers new business opportunities for casinos and sportsbooks, attracting a younger, tech-savvy audience.
