Massachusetts Gaming Commission Fines FanDuel $10,000
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has imposed a $10,000 fine on FanDuel for accepting three improper bets on the Boston College basketball team, totaling $11 in wagers.

What Does the Fine Address?
The fine imposed by the MGC pertains to a violation of Massachusetts sports betting regulations. FanDuel accepted three bets on the Boston College men’s basketball team’s performance in the NCAA tournament before the team had officially qualified for the event.
The bets were placed between March 9 and March 13, 2024, totaling $11, and FanDuel voluntarily reported the error to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
According to the report, a FanDuel employee mistakenly lifted the restriction on NCAA bets while opening markets for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) tournament, in which Boston College participated.
The commission unanimously approved the $10,000 fine.
Is the Penalty Appropriate?
Some commissioners raised concerns about whether the fine is proportional to the severity of the violation, given the small number and low value of the bets.
Commissioner Nakisha Skinner emphasized the need to consider the weight of future penalties, while Commissioner Brad Hill suggested reexamining the regulations prohibiting futures bets on in-state college teams before they are officially included in tournaments, especially for highly ranked teams.
MGC Chair Jordan Maynard agreed, stating that the commission should review whether these regulations warrant adjustment.
