Philadelphia District Attorney Sues Elon Musk and PAC for Alleged Election Interference
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk and his political action committee (PAC), America PAC, accusing them of attempting to influence the U.S. presidential election by offering $1 million in prize money to registered voters in key swing states. Musk, a known supporter of Donald Trump, has come under scrutiny as both Krasner and the Department of Justice argue that this initiative constitutes an illegal lottery.
Elon Musk’s PAC and Its Influence on the U.S. Presidential Election
Elon Musk and his America PAC allegedly organized a lottery offering registered voters in key states a chance to win $1 million, provided they sign a petition supporting free speech and the right to bear arms.
In Pennsylvania, petition signers are reportedly awarded $100, with an additional $100 for each referral who also signs.
These actions have raised significant legal and ethical concerns. District Attorney Krasner’s lawsuit claims that the lottery is illegal under Pennsylvania law, which mandates state regulation for all lotteries.
The suit argues that Musk and America PAC are “lulling Philadelphians into complacency” by prompting them to disclose personal information and make a political declaration in exchange for a chance to win $1 million.
“Clearly Illegal” Action by Musk
Professor Rick Hansen from UCLA School of Law labeled the initiative “clearly illegal,” suggesting it qualifies as vote-buying. Under federal law, paying or offering payment for voter registration or voting is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
Ironically, Musk’s petition in support of the U.S. Constitution may conflict with constitutional principles if it is deemed a form of vote-buying. The U.S. Department of Justice has warned America PAC that this $1 million lottery could violate federal election law.
Musk is supporting Republican candidate Donald Trump in the presidential race against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, amplifying the controversy surrounding his alleged influence efforts.
