Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Restrict Sports Betting Advertisements

In an effort to address concerns over the growing influence of sports betting, Representative Paul Tonko of New York and Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut have introduced new federal legislation. The proposed bill seeks to implement stricter regulations on sports betting advertisements and the use of artificial intelligence in the industry.

SAFE Bet Act Aims to Establish Federal Standards

Titled the Supporting Affordability & Fairness with Every Bet Act (SAFE Bet Act), the legislation aims to mitigate gambling-related harms by setting federal standards for both online and in-person sports betting. The act proposes limitations on advertising practices to protect consumers and reduce the prevalence of gambling promotions.

The lawmakers expressed deep concern over the omnipresence of sports betting advertisements across various media platforms. Representative Tonko highlighted the issue by stating, “This relationship between the gambling industry and sports has reached intolerably dangerous levels, and it’s well past time for Congress to step up and make a difference.”

One of the key provisions of the SAFE Bet Act is a ban on gambling operators from running advertisements between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Additionally, the bill seeks to prohibit such advertisements during live sporting events. These measures are designed to limit exposure to gambling promotions, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Statements from the Bill’s Sponsors

Representative Tonko emphasized the relentless nature of gambling promotions, saying, “Now every single solitary moment of every sporting event across the globe has become a betting opportunity. Whether you’re scrolling on social media, driving down the highway past billboards, or listening to your favorite podcast or radio station, sports betting ads are there to prompt you with an endless cascade of flashy promotions.”

The proposed legislation also touches on the use of artificial intelligence within the sports betting industry. While specific regulations are yet to be detailed, the bill underscores the need for oversight to prevent potential exploitation and ensure ethical use of AI technologies in gambling.
