Ohio for Responsible Gambling Launches Campaign to Combat Athlete Harassment

In response to the rising incidents of harassment faced by student-athletes, both online and in person, Ohio for Responsible Gambling has introduced a new initiative aimed at fostering a safer sports culture in the era of online sports betting.

The Impact of Online Harassment

The campaign, titled More Than A Bet, serves as a comprehensive online resource designed to support coaches, athletes, and campus leaders in tackling the growing problem of gambling-related harassment.

The need for this campaign is highlighted by alarming statistics from the NCAA, which reveal that one in three high-profile athletes has received abusive messages from individuals with a betting interest.

Shockingly, 90% of this harassment occurs online or through social media platforms. Additionally, 15% to 25% of all athlete abuse connected to sporting events is now linked to betting, making it the fastest-growing form of harassment in sports.

Support and Resources for the Sports Community

More Than A Bet provides vital resources for various stakeholders within the sports community. The platform includes specific guidance for college coaches, helping them to intervene when online harassment becomes excessive.

It also offers student-athletes reassurance that they are not alone, along with practical tools to navigate these challenges. For campus life leaders and counselors, the initiative provides actionable steps to implement supportive measures on college campuses.

Tom Stickrath, Chairman of the Ohio Casino Control Commission, emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, stating, “These young athletes are more than a bet. The mental toll of online harassment is unacceptable. By learning about the issue and supporting student-athletes, we can change the narrative.”
