FanDuel Fined by New Jersey for Betting on Past MMA Events

12.07.2024

FanDuel has been fined $2,000 by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) for accepting bets on mixed martial arts (MMA) matches that had already occurred.

Breakdown in Communication

The incident, which happened on April 1, 2022, involved 34 wagers on Professional Fighters League (PFL) events that took place on March 25.

The error stemmed from a failure in communication between FanDuel and its data providers. The PFL events in question were recorded and aired later, but FanDuel’s systems mistakenly offered betting markets as if the matches were live.

New Jersey Deputy Attorney General Gina DeAnnuntis noted that FanDuel’s traders did not verify the event status with the PFL.

Self-Reporting and Financial Impact

FanDuel reported the mistake to the authorities, revealing that it had taken $190,904 in wagers based on the incorrect information. To resolve the issue, the company paid out a total of $231,094 to settle the bets.

While the DGE imposed the fine on January 2, the penalty was not made public until July 10.
