Ohio Tightens Rules on iGaming Promotions and Advertising
The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) is initiating changes to the state’s iGaming regulations. These modifications aim to address concerns about promotional practices and ensure clearer advertising standards within the industry.
New Restrictions on Promotions
Under the proposed Ohio Administrative Code Chapter 3775-16-09, operators will face limitations on how they can offer promotions or bonuses.
The new rule specifically prohibits tying gambling promotions to non-gaming consumer transactions, directly impacting strategies like those previously employed by Fanatics.
The OCCC’s proposed regulations include provisions to safeguard vulnerable groups. Promotions targeting individuals under 21, those ineligible for sports gaming, or people with gambling problems will be expressly forbidden.
Verification Requirements
To offer promotions linked to non-gaming transactions, operators must verify that participants are at least 21 years old. Additionally, these offers cannot be extended to individuals enrolled in Ohio’s Voluntary Exclusion Program, further emphasizing player protection measures.
The OCCC has opened a public comment period until July 12, allowing stakeholders to voice their opinions on the proposed changes. Alongside this, the commission has provided a Business Impact Analysis to help operators and residents understand the potential effects of the new regulations.
