Fanatics Sportsbook Fined for Betting Rule Violation in Massachusetts

Fanatics Sportsbook was fined $10,000 by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) for accepting an in-state bet on Boston College, which is against state sports betting regulations.

Self-Reporting and Response

As reported by Legal Sports Report, the incident occurred in December when a Fanatics customer placed a $50 wager on the Boston College Eagles in their Wasabi Fenway Bowl matchup against Southern Methodist University.

Massachusetts rules prohibit bets on in-state college teams unless they are participating in a larger tournament, such as March Madness.

Fanatics Sportsbook promptly self-reported the violation within 24 hours, canceled the wager, and refunded the customer.

Despite the proactive response, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission determined that the sportsbook had breached its regulations.

Commission’s Decision

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission voted unanimously (4-0) to impose a “civil administrative penalty” following a recommendation from the Investigations and Enforcement Bureau (IEB), which launched an investigation after being notified by Fanatics in December.

Jordan Maynard, the interim chair of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, underscored the importance of compliance with state betting regulations. “The goal of the commission was to ensure that the rules were clear and followed,” Maynard stated. “This was achieved in this case, and it was handled well.”
