Montana Sports Betting Sees Strong January Performance
The Montana Lottery has unveiled its sports betting revenue figures for January, showcasing a robust performance in the face of fluctuating market dynamics.
The state agency reported a revenue of $852,106 for the month, underpinned by solid holds in key sports categories, despite a slight downturn in overall handle.
Revenue and Handle Dynamics
January’s handle amounted to $5.9 million, a 17.9% decrease from the same period last year, yet it still ranks as the seventh-highest in the 47-month history of sports betting in Montana. The revenue, while experiencing a 13% decline, achieved the eighth-best overall figure, buoyed by a 14.5% hold—an improvement of eight-tenths of a percentage point over last year’s opening month.
Football and basketball betting were the mainstays of the month’s action, accounting for 90% of the total handle at $5.2 million. Football wagers alone generated more than $343,000 in revenue for the house, with an 11.2% win rate. Basketball added another $332,000 to the revenue pool, thanks to a notable 15.4% hold, illustrating the significant contribution of these sports to the betting ecosystem in Montana.
Other Sports Contributions
Hockey also made a notable contribution to January’s revenue, with over $50,000 generated from a 17.8% win rate on nearly $282,000 in bets. The “special” category of wagering stood out with a remarkable 59.2% hold on almost $79,000 in handle, leading to operator winnings of $46,504. These figures highlight the diverse range of betting interests among Montana’s sports betting community.
The Montana Lottery’s ability to maintain a monthly hold of 14% or better for the 23rd time, and sustain double-digit holds for the seventh consecutive month, underscores the consistent performance of the state’s sports betting market. The 13.6% hold for 2023 remains competitive, closely trailing the all-time high of 14.1%.
