Michigan Cracks Down on Illegal Online Gaming Operations
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has escalated its efforts to regulate online gaming by issuing cease-and-desist orders to three websites operating illegally within the state.
These companies, including PredictionStrike Inc., Sweepstakes Limited, and VGW LuckyLand, Inc., have been conducting unlicensed gaming activities, prompting immediate action from state regulators.
Protecting Michigan Citizens from Unregulated iGaming
MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams emphasized the importance of adhering to gambling regulations. The board’s primary concern is safeguarding Michigan residents from unregulated sites that offer no player protection, evade taxes, and potentially exploit vulnerable users.
Michigan, one of the six states allowing online casinos, requires iGaming firms to undergo thorough reviews before receiving a license. Licensed operations must partner with either Detroit’s commercial casinos or tribal entities with a Class III gaming compact. Renowned platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings are examples of legal iGaming operations in partnership with local casinos.
Investigation into Illegal Gaming Websites
The MGCB launched an investigation following tips about unlicensed websites. Their findings revealed that PredictionStrike was offering casino gambling and sports betting without a license, VGW was operating illegal internet gambling games, and Sweepstakes Limited, operating as Stake.us, was running unlicensed online lottery and raffle games. The MGCB disputes Stake’s claim of being a social casino.
Michigan’s Lawful Internet Gaming Act of 2019 restricts online casino gaming licenses to Michigan’s licensed commercial and tribal casinos. The act imposes strict penalties for operating unlicensed gambling ventures, including felony charges and significant fines.
Ongoing Challenge of Unlawful iGaming
The American Gaming Association advocates for more states to legalize online gaming, emphasizing the need to protect consumers and eliminate illegal offshore gaming sites. The AGA CEO, Bill Miller, criticizes these unauthorized operators for lacking consumer protection and integrity standards and calls for better enforcement of U.S. laws against overseas companies targeting American players.
