NCPG Names Heather L. Maurer as Executive Director
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) Board of Directors has appointed Heather L. Maurer, MA, CAE as the organization’s next Executive Director. Maurer will formally take on the role starting January 7, 2026. She brings more than 25 years of experience in management and leadership within the public health, policy, and nonprofit sectors.

A Leader in Nonprofit Management
Maurer’s background is highlighted by her ability to strengthen national organizations and expand their influence.
Most recently, Maurer served as the Chief Executive Officer for the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health. During her tenure there, she restructured operations, diversified revenue streams, and established stable reserves. These efforts led the organization to its strongest financial position in over a decade, setting a framework for long-term growth.
Derek Longmeier, President of the NCPG Board of Directors, praised Maurer’s selection. He stated that in a competitive search, she “emerged as a strong leader” due to her proven ability to build national partnerships and elevate organizational influence. Her appointment is seen as invaluable as the NCPG works to broaden awareness and unite stakeholders nationwide.
As the new Executive Director, Maurer will oversee the NCPG’s national programs, strategic direction, partnerships, and advocacy initiatives. Her core work will center on reinforcing the NCPG’s advocacy presence and bringing together affiliates, policymakers, industry leaders, and community groups. This collaboration is designed to advance policies that prevent gambling-related harm and increase access to essential support services.
Maurer expressed that she is “honored to join NCPG and build on its strong legacy.” She emphasized her commitment to ensuring that problem gambling is fully recognized within the public health framework.
Goals for National Programs and Support
Maurer will guide key initiatives aimed at enhancing the NCPG’s reach and effectiveness across the country.
A central focus of her leadership will be to enhance the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network. This initiative is crucial for ensuring rapid and accessible support for those struggling with gambling issues.
She will also lead efforts to elevate the NCPG’s public awareness campaigns. This work will help the organization remain the national authority for prevention, education, and advocacy related to problem gambling. The Board noted that input from the broader problem gambling and responsible gambling community was essential in making a selection that reflected the community’s priorities.
